Trump appointee Jay E. Town resigns as U.S. attorney for Northern District of Alabama in the wake of reports about possible discovery fraud in Burt Newsome case

Jay E. Town has resigned as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, sources tell Legal Schnauzer (LS).

Town, a Donald Trump appointee, perhaps is best known for heading the prosecution in the North Birmingham Superfund bribery scandal, which led to convictions of former State Rep. Oliver Robinson, along with executives from Drummond Company and Birmingham's Balch Bingham law firm.

Town's exit might be tied to evidence that he helped rig a bogus deposition for Balch and Verizon Wireless in a an alleged conspiracy case targeting solo Birmingham attorney Burt Newsome, a source tells LS. Also, Town was caught on camera sharing drinks with Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite leading up to the Superfund trial.

We reported Wednesday on the latest evidence of possible discovery fraud in the Newsome case. Before accepting the U.S. attorney job in Alabama, Town worked in New Jersey for a law firm that represented Verizon.
