Why Do Ex Wives Of Campus Crest CEO Ted Rollins Tend To Issue Warnings About Possible Child Abuse?

Ted Rollins
Birmingham resident Sherry Carroll Rollins did not realize it at the time, but she now says Ted Rollins' first wife tried to warn her that he might abuse her two sons from a previous marriage.

Sherry and Ted Rollins were married for 14 years before their divorce was finalized in 2005, right here in my backyard, Shelby County, Alabama. Ted Rollins grew up in one of the nation's wealthiest families, the folks behind Orkin Pest Control, and he has gone on to become CEO of Campus Crest Communities, a Charlotte-based developer of student housing that has received more than $400 million in Wall Street support.

Public documents reveal that the fears of Monica Bulich, Ted Rollins' first wife, came true. He was convicted in 1995 of assaulting his stepson, Zac Parrish, who was 16 years old at the time. Two years before that, social-services officials in North Carolina investigated Ted Rollins for possible child sexual abuse, based on a citizen complaint.

We do not know what prompted Monica Bulich to warn Sherry Carroll about what might be ahead for her. But we do know about some of what went on during Ted Rollins' second marriage. And in an example of history repeating itself, we know that Sherry Carroll Rollins sent a warning to the woman who would become Mrs. Ted Rollins, No. 3.

What drove Sherry Rollins' concerns? Once her divorce was complete, she knew that Ted Rollins was about to marry a woman named Holly Matheson, from Greenville, South Carolina. And the new woman in Ted Rollins' life had a son, Ethan Matheson, who was about 10 years old. That just happens to have been the age of Zac Parrish when Ted Rollins entered his life.

"Funny how Ted chooses wives with young boys," Sherry Rollins says. "Seems to be a pattern."

Sherry Rollins decided not be silent about her concerns:

I know [Ted] is still doing the same things to someone; just don't know who the victim is. I wrote Holly an anonymous letter when I heard she was marrying Ted. I told her he had abused a young boy, and he would do it again. I sent it to her from Asheville, North Carolina. I don't know what she thought or if she heeded the earning. I fear Ethan was Ted's interest in marrying her. I wonder if Ethan is alright.

Ethan Matheson is the same age as Sarah Rollins, one of two daughters (along with Emma Rollins) that Ted and Sherry Rollins had together. He now is a freshman at Colorado State University, one of the schools that soon will be home to The Grove, the banner under which Campus Crest builds student apartment complexes.

Sherry Rollins says her daughter and Ethan Matheson have become fairly good friends. "Sarah says that Ethan hates Ted and says he is crazy. I wish Zac could talk to Ethan. . . . I wonder if [Ted] has gotten to Ethan."

Did Ethan Matheson become a victim when his mother married Ted Rollins? We do not have a sure answer to that question, but Sherry Rollins provides important history:

Ted got with Holly when Ethan was 8 years old. Ted had met Holly and Ethan, as Ethan was a little boy in Sarah's class at school. He came to our house for Sarah's birthday party, with his mom and dad. We always saw them at school, at events. So when [Sarah, Emma, and I] left Greenville, Ethan was 8 years old. Ted moved in with Holly and Ethan when Ethan was 9 or 10.
I sent her the letter in 2005, after my divorce--so Ethan was by then 10 years old. I told her I was afraid that Ted might harm him, as he had already done to another boy. I never signed my name and signed it as someone concerned about the safety of her child.

  1. To answer the question in your headline:

Because they've seen evidence that he abuses children.

  3. LS, perhaps Ethan Matheson would be a good subject for one of your next interviews.

Yes, and the evidence is a matter of public records, as we have shown in documents published here. It's not just a "he said, she said" situation.

  5. I wonder if Ethan Matheson pays full price for tuition and fees at Colorado State, given that his stepfather has a huge apartment complex going up there. Smells like a deal to me.

  6. Hmmm, sounds like Holly Matheson was providing Ted Rollins with "certain services" that contributed to the breakup of the Rollins marriage.

  7. Would love to know what Holly Matheson did with the note she received. Most mothers, I think, would find that pretty hard to ignore.

  8. I live in Fort Collins, CO, and know that residents here fought The Grove project with all of their might. It's basically going to ruin adjoining neighborhoods. Can't help but wonder if Ted Rollins' stepson received special favors in being admitted to CSU.

  9. Is it safe to say Orkin Pest Control has an interest in Campus Crest Communities?

Randall Rollins, co-head of Orkin, had a joint venture with Ted Rollins called St. James Capital. And it appears that Ted Rollins folded his interest from SJC into Campus Crest. So yes, I think it's a pretty solid bet that Orkin has a financial stake in Campus Crest.

  11. Paula J. Poskon now thinks it a "he said, she said" situation.

Robert J. Venable DEFINITELY has a distinct way of changing minds.

Wonder what he told her LS?

  12. Jeffrey:

Venable is managing director of Robert W. Baird? My guess is that he told her something like this:

"Make that interview go away or you are going to wind up counting beans at our Peoria office."

  13. I am a friend of Ethan Matheson's. He is accepting leases for Campus Crest at the Grove apartments in Colorado State. And yes he was forced to go to this school and work at the apartments of his step father's. And I think his tuition was part of a pre arranged deal with Campus Crest.

Thanks for sharing. I feel for anyone who had go through a major chunk of childhood with Ted Rollins as a stepfather. It couldn't have been pleasant.

  15. I live near Greenville, SC, not far from where Ted and Holly Rollins reside. I've been closely following your blog for some time, mainly because I've long suspected that Mr. and Mrs. Rollins are bad actors. Noticed a comment the other day about Judge Aphrodite Konduros. Hope you will follow the trail on that judge. I believe you will find she is seriously compromised.

  16. I have been doing a little research on Aphrodite Konduros and Sam her husband. Sam serves on the upstate alliance in Greenville along with Ted Rollins and their pr person, Holly Matheson. Aphrodite clerked in the law firm of McLaren & Lee in Columbia after graduating from law school. I also looked up Sherry Rollins divorce file and it appears that Jim McLaren of that same law firm was Mrs. Rollins lawyer for her divorce she filed in S.C. It appears that she filed in 2001 and in 2002 Aphrodite walked away from her position as head of human resources in greenville county and stepped into her newly appointed position as administrative family court judge. In 2002 Ted Rollins failed to show up in the court when ordered. It seems that Sherry Rollins decided (or was led) to hire Jim McLaren as her attorney. Aphrodite Kondoros had clerked for him after lawschool and during the time of Sherry's divorce proceedings Aphrodite becomes a judge in the family court. Then in 2003 Sherry Rollins was put out of her home by the sheriff's department on the street at her home at 4 Hickory Lane in Green Valley Estates where she was residing in Greenville county, S.C. She then went to Alabama to stay with friends and tried to get back in front of a judge in S.C. after Ted Rollins filed for divorce in Alabama. It looks like the administrative judge, Aphrodite Konduros refused to hear any of Mrs. Rollins requests for hearings and Jim McLaren sat idly by as this was allowed to go on. Does any of this sound suspicious or is it just me? Would be interesting to know how the upstate alliance, Sam Konduros, Aphrodite Konduros, Ted Rollins and Holly Matheson, and Jim McLaren helped Aphrodite to climb to her present position as appellate judge after Sherry Rollins and her two little children were finally out of South Carolina and the family court of S.C.'s jurisdiction.

  17. I read in one of your blogs, on all things Rollins, and I read that Sherry Rollins is the proud recipient of $500 (hundred) dollars per month in alimony. Can this even be true? How can a wealthy man with two companies and trust funds get away with paying $500 dollars per month in alimony? Your blog also states that the children receive $800 dollars per month in child support. How did this woman raise two children on this amount? How did she live? How did she pay rent on a residence and feed these children? I am apalled. Then when you add sexual and physical child abuse to the list of emotional and financial crimes of the divorce, it is almost too much to comprehend. How can Holly and Ted Rollins sleep at night? How can they enjoy any of their spoils after treating a woman, the mother of his children and the children that badly? He should not be CEO; he should be CNO-Chief Nazi Officer. Could he be German?

Thanks for your insights on Sam and Aphrodite Konduros. It sounds more than suspcious to me; it sounds like a criminal conspiracy, especially because of the timing.

Since Holly Rollins was part of the Upstate Alliance, a reasonable person could assume she knew all of this was going on.

The amount Sherry Rollins and her daughters receive in family support is criminal, and I don't use that word lightly. Al Crowson could not even hear the case, and for a judge to issue orders under such conditions has to be honest-services fraud (probably wire and mail fraud). How has Sherry Rollins raised two children that way? My understanding is that it's been a month-to-month, day-to-day proposition, with utilities constantly threatened to be removed. Without food stamps, not sure they would have made it.

  20. Looks like not only is Holly Rollins a criminal conspirator with the Rollins vs Rollins case as was already obvious but that she sold her own son out to a pedofile! Holly sounds like not only a shitty mom but a pimp! Can't decide who's worse, the pimp or the pedofile! " Pedofile and Pimp Rollins at your service" should be the Out going message on their home phone!

  21. Ok IF he is a child abuser and he did molest those children why was he not arrested. One thing that does not make sense to me.. If Sherry Rollins found all those feces soaked towels why did she not call the authorities or better yet why did the doctor not call DHR or authorities instead of giving her a book to read.. he could have been found guilty and sent to prison and she have the family fortune he had. That does not make sense to me.. If your child is being molested why would the doctor not report it or more why would you not report it to the authorities? I have always found that strange.

I believe I can address some of your points/questions:

    * Ted Rollins is a child abuser; there is no "if" about it. He was convicted of assaulting a 16-year-old boy, and under North Carolina law, that is child abuse, by definition. The facts on the child sexual abuse allegations are murky, so it's not certain that he is a child molester. But public documents show he is a child abuser.

    * On the feces-covered towels, Sherry Rollins did report that to a psychologist, who I believe was court-appointed as part of a social-services investigation. She followed the proper protocol, as I understand it, and the psychologist clearly believed something was amiss because he recommended she read "The Homosexual Matrix." As you suggest, the doctor should have contacted proper authorities, and that probably would have led to a criminal trial. Why did that not happen? That's unclear. We do know the psychologist was from Duke University, and Ted Rollins had a graduate degree from Duke business school, and my understanding is that his family had given quite a bit of money to the university.

    * To my knowledge, Sherry Rollins never directly witnessed child sexual abuse. She never "caught anyone in the act." The towels are powerful circumstantial evidence that something was wrong, and she reported that to a key figure in a social-services investigation. Keep in mind, an unknown citizen filed the child-sexual abuse complaint, not Sherry Rollins, and that apparently was based on something the citizen heard or witnessed.

  23. I would like to respond to a comment made by Anonymous regarding whether Sherry Rollins or the psychologist at Duke reacted properly to the signs of child abuse. It is a known fact that any person can alert DHR regarding child abuse. Does anyone know who alerted them, NO, because they keep this information confidential to protect the informant. Does anyone think the Duke psychologist who is trained to report these incidents could be the informant? Absolutely, any psychologist would report this as this was his job. Wasn't going to a psychologist to enlist help in digging through the unusual occurrences in her home and getting professional help to help her decide if these incidences were actually evidence of a crime the proper way to handle this? Are you now trying to blame the Mother and the psychologist who obviously were on the same team?
